Ferries from Årvika ferjekai

Ten minutes across the fjord, 72 active sailings, and almost nothing at either end. Arvika is a county road crossing in Møre og Romsdal doing the job a bridge would do if the water were narrower.

The crossing

Arvika to Koparneset takes about 10 minutes, with 36 sailings in our timetable and 72 across the quay in both directions. Operated by FRAM.

Thirty-six departures on a ten-minute run is roughly every twenty minutes — dense enough that the timetable rarely governs the journey.

⚠ The quay is not a place

There is a slipway, a waiting lane and the road. No shop, no fuel, no shelter worth the name. Whatever you need comes with you.

That is normal for Norwegian county crossings and worth expecting rather than discovering at seven in the morning.

What the crossing carries

Local traffic, commuters and freight moving between communities on the Storfjord's arms. There is no tourist route here and the loading pattern shows it — busiest at the start and end of the working day, quiet in between.

Where this is

Møre og Romsdal, in the fjord country south of Ålesund. The same road network carries the Solavågen crossing on the E39 and the tourist traffic heading for Geiranger.

Practicalities

No reservations. Vehicles load in arrival order and the toll is read from the registration plate through AutoPASS; foot passengers and cyclists cross free.

Season

Year round on a stable schedule. Winter weather in these fjords disrupts less than on the exposed outer coast, but it does happen.
