Ferries from Solavågen ferjekai

Solavågen ferjekai sits on Sula, the island municipality just south of Ålesund in Møre og Romsdal, and is one end of the busy E39 car-ferry crossing to Festøya in Ørsta. The service runs within the county's FRAM public-transport system, with vessels operated by Norled, and it carries the main trunk road across the Storfjorden toward southern Sunnmøre.

This is a high-frequency, high-volume crossing rather than a remote scenic hop. The distance between the quays is only about 4.3 kilometres and the passage takes roughly 20 minutes, with departures at least twice an hour for much of the day so that traffic on the E39 keeps flowing with little waiting. Because it is a link in the national E39 corridor, Solavågen sees heavy commuter and commercial traffic all year: in 2024 the crossing handled more than 680,000 vehicles, an average approaching two thousand a day, which puts it among the country's busier fjord ferries. The quay is a well-equipped modern terminal with marshalling lanes and clear signage, geared to fast turnaround rather than sightseeing, though the run across the Storfjorden still offers open views toward the Sunnmøre mountains. For most travellers it is simply part of the drive between Ålesund and the towns to the south, dependable and frequent enough that you rarely need to plan around it.
