Ferries from Solavågen ferjekai

132 active sailings from a quay most visitors to Norway have never heard of. Solavågen is a link in the E39 — the west coast trunk road — and its twenty-minute crossing to Festøya is one of seven fjord ferries on that highway.

The crossing

Solavågen to Festøya takes about 20 minutes across the Storfjord, with 66 sailings in our timetable and 132 across the quay in both directions. Operated by FRAM, the Møre og Romsdal county transport brand.

That is roughly one departure every fifteen minutes across the operating day — main-road frequency rather than island-supply frequency.

⚠ Frequency does not mean no queue

On a trunk-road crossing the constraint is deck space, not departures. Summer traffic toward Ålesund and the Geiranger road fills the lanes, and 132 sailings does not help if the vehicle in front of you is the last one aboard.

The wait is short — fifteen minutes rather than a day — but it is real, and it repeats at every E39 crossing you make.

Where this sits

Solavågen is on the Sula side, minutes from Ålesund by road. Festøya on the far shore opens the road south toward Ørsta, Volda and the Sunnmøre Alps.

Anyone driving between Ålesund and Bergen crosses here, which is why a quay serving no town at all carries this much traffic.

The ferry-free E39

Norway's stated ambition is to remove all seven fjord crossings from this road with bridges and tunnels. The project has been repeatedly rescheduled and nothing has replaced this one.
