Three brands, one shipowner

Moby bought Toremar, Tuscany's regional company, on 2 January 2012 and took 100% of Tirrenia in July 2015. The three brands operate together under Onorato Armatori as a group of roughly 38 ships making some 41,000 departures to 33 ports. This matters when reading a timetable: a Civitavecchia–Olbia sailing sold by Moby is run by Tirrenia, and several Elba crossings appear under both the Moby and Toremar names. The company is now in its fifth generation of shipowners.

The fleet, brand by brand

Moby's own ships are Moby Legacy, Moby Fantasy, Aki, Wonder and Tommy (classed as fast cruise ferries), Niki and Moby Orli as cruise ferries, and Giraglia, Kiss and Bunifazziu as conventional ferries. Tirrenia contributes Florio and Rubattino. Toremar's seven — Marmorica, Oglasa, Giuseppe Rum, Stelio Montomoli, Rio Marina Bella, Giovanni Bellini and the fast craft Schiopparello Jet — work the Tuscan archipelago.

Check-in closes earlier in summer

The published boarding deadlines are not the same all year. With a vehicle you must present yourself 90 minutes before departure. On foot it is one hour from 1 June to 30 September, but only 30 minutes from 1 October to 31 May. On the Elba runs, check-in is electronic and takes place in the yard in front of the ship.

On board

Cabins are sold as inside or outside, double or quadruple; below that are reclining seats and deck passage. Dogs may travel in the cabin, in dedicated accommodation. Free satellite wi-fi is offered on Moby Legacy, Moby Fantasy, Moby Aki and Moby Wonder only, and the company states plainly that it depends on weather and sea conditions. Reduced fares exist for island residents.
