Blu Navy runs one crossing: Piombino to Portoferraio, the main gate to Elba. What makes it worth a page is that it is not alone there — the same crossing is worked by Toremar, the regional operator, at the same hour of the day.

Head to head on the same water

Both operators time Piombino–Portoferraio at 60 minutes. Blu Navy carries 12 departures in our data against Toremar’s 21. Two companies competing on a single one-hour island crossing is unusual on this site; most routes here have one operator and no alternative, which is why so many of them are described as lifelines. On Elba in summer, you have a choice.

Which changes what a missed sailing costs

This is the practical consequence. On a monopoly crossing, missing the boat means waiting for that operator’s next one. Here the next departure may belong to the other company — so it is worth knowing both timetables and checking whether your ticket is transferable, because it generally is not. Comparing Toremar’s times alongside these is the sensible way to plan a day.

Twelve sailings, and not all of them run every day

Departures run from 07:45 to 19:00. The day masks vary: some sailings run all week, others skip a single midweek day — one group omits Thursdays, another omits Wednesdays. That pattern usually reflects a maintenance slot rather than demand, and it means a Wednesday or Thursday timetable is thinner than the rest of the week without being obviously so.

A one-hour crossing to an island with four ports

Portoferraio is Elba’s principal harbour and the one with the road connections to the rest of the island, which is why it takes the bulk of the traffic. Elba also has Rio Marina and Cavo on its northern side, both worked from Piombino by other operators at shorter crossing times. If your destination is the north-east of the island, Portoferraio is not automatically the right port.
