Toremar Schedules 2026

Toremar was created in 1975 for a single purpose: to guarantee sea transport between mainland Tuscany and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago — Elba, Capraia, Giglio, Pianosa and Gorgona. Fifty years later the purpose is unchanged, but the ownership has been round the houses.

From state company to region to private tender

For years Toremar sat inside the state-owned Tirrenia group. In 2009 it was transferred to the Region of Tuscany, which then put it out to tender. Moby, the company of shipowner Vincenzo Onorato, won in May 2011, and on 2 January 2012 the region signed a twelve-year service contract with Moby SpA and Toremar SpA for the maritime cabotage service to the archipelago. The arrangement has been legally contested since.

Three mainland ports, five islands on paper

Sailings leave from Piombino, Livorno and Porto Santo Stefano. The busiest by far is Piombino to Portoferraio on Elba, with 21 departures each way — 42 of the 149 in our timetable. Contrary to what a quick look at route summaries suggests, the crossing is 60 minutes in both directions: twenty of the twenty-one return sailings are timetabled at an hour, and only one is quicker.

Elba has four ports, not one

Portoferraio is the main gate, but Toremar also works Rio Marina and Cavo from Piombino. Cavo is the short one at 15 minutes, sitting on Elba’s northern tip closest to the mainland; Rio Marina runs 45 minutes in both directions. There is also a local hop, Cavo to Portoferraio, 15 minutes along the island’s own coast.

The long one goes to Capraia

Livorno to Capraia is timetabled at 165 minutes each way — nearly three hours, and the longest crossing this operator runs. It leaves from Livorno’s Porto Mediceo rather than Piombino, and with only 8 and 12 departures in the timetable it is a route where missing the boat means rearranging the day rather than waiting.

Two islands the timetable barely reaches

Of the five islands in the founding remit, our data covers four. Gorgona has no departures at all. Pianosa has two each way from Rio Marina, 95 minutes out and 110 back. Both figures are so far below the pattern of every other island here that landing conditions, not demand, are clearly the constraint — anyone planning to visit either should confirm access rules with the operator or the Tuscan Archipelago National Park before booking travel around them.

Giglio and Giannutri from the south

From Porto Santo Stefano on the Monte Argentario peninsula, Giglio takes 60 minutes with 14 departures out and 12 back. Giannutri, the archipelago’s southernmost island, gets two sailings each way at the same 60 minutes. These southern routes have no connection to the Elba services — different mainland port, different day out.
