About the ZadarSestrunj crossing

The Zadar to Sestrunj sailing serves one of the least-visited inhabited islands in the whole Zadar archipelago. Sestrunj lies between Ugljan, Rivanj and Dugi otok, and it is reached on a single Jadrolinija car ferry line that threads a chain of small islands.

The line

Sestrunj is a call on Jadrolinija's car ferry line 433, which runs Zadar (Gaženica) – Rivanj – Sestrunj – Zverinac – Molat – Kosirača (Ist). Departures leave from the Gaženica ferry port on the edge of Zadar, about 4–5 km from the old town, not from the central city quay. Because the boat stops at several islands, timings depend on where you are in the sequence: Sestrunj comes early, just after Rivanj, while the full run out to Molat and Ist takes around 3 hours. This is a vehicle-carrying ferry, so you can bring a car, though reserving ahead in summer is wise.

What Sestrunj is like

  • It is a genuinely quiet island of about 15 km² with a tiny resident population, only a few dozen people.
  • The single village, also called Sestrunj, sits inland on high ground, an old defensive position away from the shore.
  • Forest covers roughly 80% of the island, giving it the look of a green hill rising straight from the sea.

Come prepared

Sestrunj has very limited infrastructure, with no reliable shops or cafés to count on, so bring plenty of food, water and supplies from the mainland. Arrive at Gaženica in good time, ideally around 45 minutes before departure, especially if you are travelling with a vehicle, and confirm the current timetable, as sailings are less frequent outside the summer season.

Vehicles, pets & onboard

  • Car ferries & fast catamarans
  • Cabins on international lines
  • Island-resident discounts
  • Vehicle decks

Vehicle space is available on this route — book early, especially in peak season. Onboard facilities and vehicle, pet and luggage policies vary by operator and vessel; confirm details with the operator before booking.

Frequently asked questions

Which ferry goes from Zadar to Sestrunj?

Sestrunj is served by Jadrolinija car ferry line 433, which runs Zadar (Gaženica) – Rivanj – Sestrunj – Zverinac – Molat – Kosirača (Ist). Sestrunj is one of the earlier stops, reached just after Rivanj.

Does the Zadar to Sestrunj ferry leave from the old town?

No. It departs from the Gaženica ferry port on the outskirts of Zadar, roughly 4–5 km from the city centre, not from the central old-town quay. Allow extra time to reach Gaženica.

Can I bring a car to Sestrunj?

Yes. Line 433 is a car ferry, so vehicles are carried. In the summer high season it is advisable to reserve a vehicle space in advance and to arrive at Gaženica at least 45 minutes before departure.

How long does it take to reach Sestrunj?

Sestrunj is one of the first stops after leaving Zadar, so it is reached in a fraction of the full run. The complete line all the way to Molat and Ist takes about 3 hours, with Sestrunj well before the end.

What should I know before visiting Sestrunj?

Sestrunj is a very quiet, thickly forested island with only a few dozen residents and its single hilltop village. Facilities are minimal, so bring your own food, water and supplies from the mainland and do not rely on finding a shop or café.

How much does a ticket cost?

Ticket prices vary by operator, season and whether you bring a vehicle. Check the operator (Jadrolinija) for current fares.

Who operates this ferry?

Served by Jadrolinija.

Does the ferry run all year?

Sailing frequency on this route varies by season. Confirm current dates with the operator before travelling.

Can I take a pet on this ferry?

Most ferry operators allow pets on this route, usually in a carrier, on deck or in designated pet areas or cabins, and registered assistance dogs travel free. Rules and any fees vary by operator and vessel — check with Jadrolinija, so declare your pet when booking.

What's the luggage allowance?

Foot passengers can normally bring their own luggage aboard at no extra charge, with racks or a luggage area near the entrance, and there is usually no airline-style weight limit. Oversized or excess items may carry a fee, so check with the operator if you are travelling with bulky baggage.
