Umag to Venice Ferry

Umag to Venice is the shortest sea hop between Istria and Venice. Umag sits at the far north-western tip of Croatia, only about 93 km (roughly 50 nautical miles) of open Adriatic from Venice — closer than Poreč, Rovinj or Pula — which is why it works as a quick fast-ferry link rather than a long haul.

Operator and vessels

The crossing is served by Venezia Lines, the specialist that concentrates on seasonal high-speed links between Venice and the Istrian ports. Venezia Lines runs modern fast catamarans — its current pair, San Frangisk and sister ship San Pawl, each carry around 310 passengers. The Adriatic Lines (Kompas) network also touches Umag, but Venezia Lines is the operator most associated with this hop.

Crossing time and season

The passage takes in the region of 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours across the open sea. It is a peak-summer-only service: for 2026 the Umag departures are concentrated in the high season — roughly early July through late August — typically running about once a week from Umag. This is a much narrower window than the longer Poreč line, so dates should be checked carefully before planning a trip around it.

Good to know

• Foot passengers only — no cars or motorcycles; this is a fast passenger catamaran.
• It is an international route between Croatia and Italy. Both countries are in the Schengen area, so EU travellers usually face no routine passport control, but carry a valid passport or ID card; non-EU passengers need a passport.
• Because it is the closest Istrian port to Venice, Umag is a favourite for a fast day return to the lagoon city when the seasonal timetable is running.
