About the Torcello – Burano B crossing
Five minutes between Torcello and Burano, 96 sailings a week, with departures from 06:48 to 23:03 — the widest daily window of any of the northern lagoon shuttles.
Fourteen departures on two day patterns keep the two islands connected from before seven in the morning until after eleven at night, which is far more service than Torcello's own population could justify.
Torcello was the first place in the lagoon to be settled properly, a town of perhaps twenty thousand people before malaria and the silting of its canals emptied it; a dozen or so people live there now. Its cathedral, begun in 639, still holds a Byzantine Last Judgement mosaic. The boat runs late because visitors go out for the evening and someone has to bring them back.
