Olderdalen ferjekai to Lyngseidet ferjekai Ferry

The Olderdalen–Lyngseidet ferry is a Norwegian car ferry (ferje) that crosses the Lyngen fjord in Troms, northern Norway, in roughly 35–40 minutes. Operated by Norled on county road Fylkesvei 91 (Fv91), it links Olderdalen in Kåfjord — on the E6 highway — with Lyngseidet on the Lyngen peninsula, carrying cars, campervans, buses and freight across about 12 kilometres of open water beneath the Lyngen Alps. It is a drive-on, first-come service paid through Norway's AutoPASS number-plate system, and it runs year-round.

How long is the crossing and how often does it sail?

The sailing takes approximately 35–40 minutes quay to quay. Departures run through the day at intervals of roughly one to two hours, with early-morning and evening sailings bracketing the schedule. Frequency is heaviest in summer and thinner in winter, so always check the current Norled / AutoPASS-ferje timetable for your travel date — and note that Fv91 also includes a second ferry link (Svensby–Breivikeidet) further west toward Tromsø, so times on the two crossings are worth lining up if you are driving the whole route.

Drive-on boarding and AutoPASS payment

There is no advance booking and no ticket window. You simply drive to the ferry quay (ferjekai), queue in lane, and board on a first-come, first-served basis — arrive in good time in peak season. Payment is handled automatically:

• Automatic number-plate billing: cameras read your registration as you board; the vehicle owner is billed afterwards.
• AutoPASS ferry account: a prepaid account (with a valid tag or registered plate) earns a discount off the standard fare.
• No account: you can register plate and card with FerryPay to be charged full price by email, or do nothing and receive an invoice by post with a small invoice fee added.
• Foot passengers and cyclists travel free on Norwegian road ferries, so pay-by-plate applies to vehicles only.

Why travellers take it: the Lyngen Alps

This is one of the most scenic short ferry hops in northern Norway. The fjord is hemmed by the Lyngen Alps (Lyngsalpan), a wall of glaciated peaks rising straight from the sea — a magnet for skiers, ski-touring guides, hikers and photographers. The crossing turns a long detour around the fjord head into a relaxed 40-minute glide with front-row views, and in winter it puts you within reach of the region's renowned backcountry and Northern Lights terrain.

Winter vs summer

The route operates all year, but on a reduced winter timetable with fewer sailings than the summer peak. Arctic weather can occasionally disrupt departures, so build in buffer time and verify live status in winter conditions.

Connections at each end

On the east side, Olderdalen sits directly on the E6, the main artery toward Alta and the far north. On the west side, Lyngseidet opens onto the Lyngen peninsula and Fv91 continues toward Svensby and, via a second short ferry, back toward Tromsø. The crossing is therefore a key link in the coastal driving loop through Troms.
