Ferries from Lyngseidet ferjekai

The forty minutes between these two quays are spent looking at the Lyngen Alps. The peaks rise straight out of the water on the peninsula side, over a thousand metres of them within a couple of kilometres of the shore, and the ferry crosses in front of the whole range. It is a county road crossing that happens to be one of the better boat rides in Arctic Norway.

Where you are and where the road goes

Lyngseidet sits on the neck of the Lyngen peninsula, on Fylkesvei 91. East across the water is Olderdalen and the E6; west across the peninsula the road runs on to a second ferry at Svensby and eventually to Tromsø.

Lyngseidet to Olderdalen takes about 40 minutes, with 16 sailings in our timetable each way. The quays are 12.3 km apart across the water.

The timetable, and the two ends of the day

The first departure is around 07:20 and the last from this side about 21:20, arriving at 22:00. That evening boat matters more than it looks: it is the difference between reaching the E6 tonight and staying on the peninsula.

The route runs under the Svipper network for Troms, operated by Norled. There is no reservation system.

What the peninsula is for

Lyngen is a ski-touring and hiking destination rather than a through-route, and the traffic reflects it: the crossing is quiet outside the seasons and busy with a specific kind of visitor inside them. There are no towns of any size, one road along each side, and the mountains take up everything in between.

If you are here for the alps rather than passing through, the ferry stops being a connection and becomes the way you get to the trailheads on the eastern side.

⚠ Sixteen sailings, two crossings, one plan

Reaching Tromsø this way needs both the Lyngen ferry and the Svensby–Breivikeidet crossing beyond it, and neither runs at trunk-road frequency. Late afternoon is where itineraries fall apart.

The safe version is to treat the second ferry's last departure as the deadline for the whole day and work backwards from it.

Season

The crossing runs all year because people live on both sides, but winter here is genuinely Arctic and the roads either side are the variable, not the boat. Northern lights season overlaps with the months when the mountain roads are least forgiving.

Late spring through September gives you the crossing, the light and open roads at the same time — and the view that is the actual reason to take this ferry rather than drive round.
