About the Marano – Lignano crossing
The link between Marano Lagunare, an old fishing village on the Friuli lagoon, and the popular beach resort of Lignano Sabbiadoro is a small seasonal passenger boat service, not a car ferry. Operated within the regional TPL FVG public transport network, it is a summer motonave (motorboat) line aimed at tourists and day-trippers who want to cross the lagoon rather than drive the long way round by road.
The crossing
The boat runs across the Marano lagoon, a protected wetland environment, with a scenic passage lasting roughly 40 minutes. Boarding points are the old harbour at Marano (near the historic vecchia pescheria, the old fish market) and the “Sbarco dei Pirati” landing at Lignano. It is a low-key, atmospheric trip through reed channels and open lagoon water rather than an open-sea sailing.
Season and practical notes
- The service is strictly seasonal, typically operating from around mid-June to late September, with reduced or weekend-focused sailings at the shoulders of the season.
- It is a passenger-only motonave; vehicles are not carried, though the boat is normally equipped to take a number of bicycles (useful for exploring both the resort and the village).
- There are only a few departures a day in each direction, so it works best for planned day trips – for example combining Lignano's beaches with seafood and birdwatching around Marano.
- Tickets are sold through the TPL FVG channels (app, ticket points and on board where available).
Timetables and operating dates change each summer, so always verify the current schedule with TPL FVG before relying on the boat.
