About the Mali LošinjPremuda crossing

Premuda is one of the most remote and thinly populated inhabited islands in the Zadar archipelago, home to only around sixty permanent residents. It is best known to divers and history buffs: the Austro-Hungarian battleship SMS Szent István was torpedoed and sunk just off its shores in 1918, and the island's underwater limestone galleries, nicknamed the "cathedrals," draw cave and wreck divers each summer. Getting there means catching the coastal catamaran that ties the Zadar islands to Lošinj.

How the connection works

Mali Lošinj to Premuda is not a standalone shuttle. It is the northern leg of the Zadar–Lošinj coastal line, which runs Zadar (Gaženica), Ist, Olib, Silba, Premuda and Mali Lošinj. Premuda is the stop immediately south of Mali Lošinj, so travelling from the Lošinj end you reach Premuda as the first island call after departure – a relatively short crossing, usually in the order of 45 minutes to an hour depending on the vessel and conditions.

  • Jadrolinija catamaran: passenger-only, the fastest option on the Zadar–Lošinj line
  • Jadrolinija car ferry: a seasonal vehicle-carrying service operates on the same corridor during the peak summer window, so cars are possible only in high season and on select sailings

Because Premuda has so few sailings, frequency is limited and strongly seasonal – often just a handful of departures per week outside July and August. Plan around the timetable rather than assuming a daily boat, and always double-check the current schedule before setting out.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Mali Lošinj to Premuda?

You take the coastal catamaran (or, in high summer, the seasonal car ferry) that links Zadar and Mali Lošinj via Ist, Olib, Silba and Premuda. Premuda is the stop just south of Mali Lošinj, so it is the first island call heading down the line.

How long does the crossing take?

The Mali Lošinj to Premuda leg is fairly short, generally around 45 minutes to an hour. Exact timings vary between the passenger catamaran and the seasonal ferry, and by conditions.

Can I bring a car to Premuda from Mali Lošinj?

Only in the peak summer season and on the vehicle-carrying ferry that runs the Zadar to Mali Lošinj corridor for a limited period. The regular catamaran is passenger-only. Outside that window, treat Premuda as effectively foot-passenger access.

How often do boats run to Premuda?

Infrequently. Premuda is a very small island with only a few sailings a week for much of the year, increasing in July and August. Always check the current timetable, as it is easy to be stranded by a missed connection.

Is there a direct boat, or do I change?

It is direct in the sense that the same line serves both ports, so you do not change vessels. You simply ride the Zadar to Mali Lošinj coastal service and get off at Premuda, or board at Premuda for Mali Lošinj.

How much does a ticket cost?

Ticket prices vary by operator, season and whether you bring a vehicle. Check the operator (Jadrolinija) for current fares.

Who operates this ferry?

Served by Jadrolinija.

Does the ferry run all year?

Sailing frequency on this route varies by season. Confirm current dates with the operator before travelling.

Can I take a pet on this ferry?

Most ferry operators allow pets on this route, usually in a carrier, on deck or in designated pet areas or cabins, and registered assistance dogs travel free. Rules and any fees vary by operator and vessel — check with Jadrolinija, so declare your pet when booking.

What's the luggage allowance?

Foot passengers can normally bring their own luggage aboard at no extra charge, with racks or a luggage area near the entrance, and there is usually no airline-style weight limit. Oversized or excess items may carry a fee, so check with the operator if you are travelling with bulky baggage.

Where can I check live sailing times?

The timetable on this page shows the latest published sailings for this route. Always confirm with the operator before travelling, as schedules change seasonally.
