About the Liaison Fromentine – Île d'Yeu crossing
The Fromentine–Île d'Yeu crossing is the main year-round lifeline between the French mainland and the Vendée island of Yeu, which lies roughly 20 km off the Atlantic coast. "Fromentine" is the departure port, a harbour in the commune of La Barre-de-Monts on the Vendée coast, close to the Noirmoutier passage; ferries arrive at Port-Joinville, the island's only harbour, on the northeast side of Yeu.
The route is run by Compagnie Yeu Continent, the island's historic operator, which has provided daily connections here since 1959 and is the only company carrying vehicles to the island — competitors such as Compagnie Vendéenne run passenger-only fast boats. Yeu Continent offers two very different crossings from Fromentine. Its car-and-freight ferry, the Insula Oya III (in service since 2022, with room for about 15 vehicles), makes the crossing in around 70 minutes, while its fast passenger boats cover the same water in about 30 minutes. Note that space for cars is very limited and must be booked well ahead — many visitors instead leave their vehicle on the mainland, where the company runs a reserved car park of around 200 free spaces about fifteen minutes' walk from the terminal.
Sailings are seasonal in intensity rather than seasonal overall: the company runs a reduced daily service through winter and progressively adds rotations from spring, peaking in the July–August–early September high season with around four departures on weekdays and five or six on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Because Yeu is a French island there is no passport or border control — it is a purely domestic crossing — though foot passengers, cyclists and vehicle drivers should still book in advance for busy summer dates.
