Ios to Heraklion Ferry

The Ios to Heraklion ferry is the southbound crossing from the Cycladic island of Ios down to Crete's main port at Heraklion. It forms one leg of the longer SeaJets line that threads through the Cyclades between Piraeus and Crete, so an Ios departure is usually a sailing that has already started further north. Like its reverse direction, it is a seasonal, summer-only service and does not run through the winter.

Operator and vessels

The crossing is operated by SeaJets on high-speed catamarans, principally the Worldchampion Jet and Champions League Jet. Both carry foot passengers and vehicles, so you can drive off the boat directly in Heraklion. These craft are fast (up to roughly 50 knots) but, as high-speed catamarans, they are more likely than large conventional ferries to be affected by strong summer winds.

Journey time and how it varies

Ios lies about 75 nautical miles from Heraklion. The time on the water depends heavily on the routing:

• A direct southbound hop is on the order of 3 hours.
• Sailings that call at intermediate ports such as Santorini before reaching Crete can take around 5 to 6 hours in total.
• Across the whole Heraklion-Cyclades line there can be up to a dozen weekly southbound itineraries in peak season, though only some of these serve Ios.

Note that the reverse direction is not a mirror image: departure times, the exact set of intermediate stops and the total duration differ from the Heraklion-to-Ios leg, because each vessel follows its own daily rotation. Ios is a popular final hop when travellers work their way south through the Cyclades toward Crete, whether to catch a flight from Heraklion or to continue exploring the island.
