Igoumenitsa to Ancona Ferry

The Igoumenitsa to Ancona ferry is the busiest single leg of the Greece-Italy Adriatic corridor, connecting Igoumenitsa in the Epirus region of northwest Greece with the central Italian port of Ancona. Igoumenitsa is Greece's principal western gateway, and this crossing is the fastest overnight link to central and northern Italy, making it the default choice for travellers, caravanners and freight heading between Greece and much of Europe.

Operators and vessels

This is a competitive, high-frequency route shared by several companies. Superfast Ferries (Attica Group, long marketed as the ANEK-Superfast service), Minoan Lines (Grimaldi Group) and Grimaldi's own Grimaldi Lines all serve it, giving a dozen or so weekly sailings across the operators at peak times. The ships are large, modern cruise-ferries offering cabins, reclining air-seats, restaurants, bars, shops, and on some vessels a pool and spa.

Crossing time and schedule

Most sailings are overnight, with a typical duration of around 15 to 17 hours, though some services run closer to 19 hours depending on the vessel and any intermediate call at Corfu. Departures from Igoumenitsa are generally in the afternoon or evening for a next-morning arrival in Ancona, with additional daytime sailings in summer. Because two operators run the corridor, there is usually more than one departure most days in high season.

Ports, vehicles and documents

The route carries cars, motorhomes, caravans, motorcycles, coaches and freight lorries alongside foot passengers, and camping-on-board (sleeping in your caravan on the garage deck) is typically offered from spring to autumn. Igoumenitsa's modern port links to Corfu, the Ionian islands and the Egnatia motorway; Ancona sits near the city centre with direct rail and road connections north to Bologna, Venice and beyond. As both countries are in the EU and Schengen area, EU travellers need only a valid photo ID, while non-EU passengers should carry a passport.
