About the Hamburg – Helgoland crossing
This is the long way to Helgoland and, for many people, the best one: down the Elbe from the middle of Hamburg, past the container terminals and out into the German Bight. The HSC "Halunder Jet" leaves St. Pauli Landungsbrücken, pier 3/4 at 08.30 or 09.00 depending on the day and reaches the island around 12.30–12.45 — three and a half to four and a quarter hours at up to 36 knots.
Season and times
The service runs 19 March to 1 November 2026. Departures are 09.00 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays and 08.30 on the other days, with small seasonal variations. Return sailings leave Helgoland at 16.30 or 17.00, back in Hamburg between 20.15 and 20.45. Be at the pier 15 minutes before departure.
Fares are two decisions
First the travel-time class — C, B or A — which sets the base: a Hamburg day trip is €92.10, €102.80 or €114.70. Then the cabin category: Panorama Class adds €16.50 per leg, Premium Class €28.30, with VIP options above. A multi-day return runs €112.00–€140.00. Children 4–14 pay about half; over-60s and passengers with 70%+ disability €83.00–€103.00; school groups of 16 or more €62.10–€77.40; a dog €27.00. A temporary fuel surcharge applies on top.
Why it berths and others don't
The Halunder Jet was built specifically for this route and goes straight into Helgoland's harbour. Historically, larger ships anchored offshore and passengers were taken ashore in the island's open Börteboote — atmospheric, but not if you have luggage or limited mobility. Arriving alongside removes that step.
One late sailing a year
The annual Music-Cruise, on 12 September 2026, leaves Hamburg at 09.00 and departs Helgoland at 20.00, docking back at 23.45 — the only sailing on this route that gets you a full evening on the island.
