Dunkirk to Dover Ferry

The Dunkirk to Dover crossing is one of the two main short-sea routes over the English Channel, run exclusively by DFDS between the French port of Dunkerque (Dunkirk) and the White Cliffs port of Dover in Kent. The sailing covers roughly 40 nautical miles and takes about 2 hours door-to-door on the water, a little longer than the rival Calais crossing but usually quieter and with easier motorway access on the French side via the A16.

DFDS runs up to around a dozen departures each way per day, spread across the full 24 hours so that early-morning and late-night sailings are available for freight and holiday traffic alike. The French terminal is at Dunkirk (Loon-Plage), west of the city, while the English side lands at the Port of Dover. Since Brexit, all travellers need a valid passport rather than an ID card, and vehicles pass through both French and UK border checks. British and EU juxtaposed controls mean much of the paperwork is completed at the departure port before boarding. Travellers should also allow extra time during peak summer weekends and school holidays, when Channel ports are at their busiest.
