About the Dunkirk – Dover crossing
The Dunkirk to Dover crossing is one of the two main short-sea routes over the English Channel, run exclusively by DFDS between the French port of Dunkerque (Dunkirk) and the White Cliffs port of Dover in Kent. The sailing covers roughly 40 nautical miles and takes about 2 hours door-to-door on the water, a little longer than the rival Calais crossing but usually quieter and with easier motorway access on the French side via the A16.
Frequency and schedule
This is a high-frequency, year-round service. DFDS runs up to around a dozen departures each way per day, spread across the full 24 hours so that early-morning and late-night sailings are available for freight and holiday traffic alike. Because the ships shuttle continuously, there is rarely a long wait, and missed sailings can often be rolled onto the next available departure.
Vehicles and who it is for
Dunkirk to Dover is a drive-on, drive-off car ferry aimed at vehicle traffic: cars, motorhomes, caravans, motorcycles and freight lorries. Crucially, it does not carry foot passengers – every booking must include a vehicle. The purpose-built ferries (the DFDS "Côte" and "Seaways" class ships) offer spacious car decks, lounges, cafes, shops and outside deck areas for the short hop across the Channel.
Ports and border control
The French terminal is at Dunkirk (Loon-Plage), west of the city, while the English side lands at the Port of Dover. Since Brexit, all travellers need a valid passport rather than an ID card, and vehicles pass through both French and UK border checks. British and EU juxtaposed controls mean much of the paperwork is completed at the departure port before boarding. Travellers should also allow extra time during peak summer weekends and school holidays, when Channel ports are at their busiest.
Overall, Dunkirk to Dover is a reliable, no-frills motoring gateway between France and England – slightly less hectic than Calais and popular with drivers heading to or from Belgium, the Netherlands and northern France.
