About the Drøbak – Oscarsborg østre kai crossing
This four-minute crossing leads to the guns that changed 9 April 1940. As the German cruiser Blücher came up the Oslofjord that morning, the commandant at Oscarsborg, Colonel Birger Kristian Eriksen, ordered fire at 04:21 from about a thousand metres. Two shells from the fortress’s 28-centimetre guns struck the ship, which sank — delaying the German advance on the capital long enough for the Norwegian government to get out.
Six sailings, all in the middle of the day

Oscarsborg was built in the middle of the nineteenth century to defend what was then Christiania against attack from the sea. It stayed in military use after the war and was opened to the public in 2004 as a heritage site; the island is state property, managed by Forsvarsbygg, the agency responsible for Norway’s defence estates.
