About

About Forsvarsbygg Oscarsborgfergen

The Oscarsborg ferry crosses from Drøbak to Oscarsborg fortress, on the Kaholmene islets in the narrowest part of the Oslofjord. It is run by Forsvarsbygg, the Norwegian Defence Estates Agency, which manages the fortress as a cultural monument.

Buy before you board

Tickets must be purchased before boarding and shown as a QR code at the gangway — there is no sale on the boat. Usefully, the ticket stays valid for seven days from when you start your journey and validate it, which covers the return leg whenever you decide to take it. You are not tied to a specific sailing back.

The place you are going to

On 9 April 1940 the guns and torpedo battery at Oscarsborg sank the German cruiser Blücher in the fjord below. The delay it caused gave the Norwegian government and royal family time to evacuate Oslo and organise resistance — which is why a small island fortress occupies an outsized place in the country's memory.

Longer history

King Christian IV ordered a blockhouse on Kaholmene in 1641; it was finished in 1643. The fortress as it stands began in the 1830s, and its first building, the round Havnefortet, was completed in 1847 — it is the one you see beside the landing where the boat from Drøbak ties up. The fortress served the military for another century and a half and opened to the public in 2004.

What is there now

Museums, concerts, outdoor opera, art exhibitions and sporting events, with cafés and a restaurant on the island. Parking and sailing times are published alongside the ticket page.
