The Oscarsborg ferry is the little boat that carries visitors out to Oscarsborg Fortress, the island stronghold in the Drøbak Sound of the Oslofjord in Norway. It is run by Forsvarsbygg, the Norwegian Defence Estates Agency, which manages the country's historic fortresses.
To the fortress that sank the Blücher
The short crossing runs from the town of Drøbak across the sound to the fortress islets — a journey of only a few minutes to an island with no road access. Oscarsborg is famous for 9 April 1940, when its guns and a hidden torpedo battery sank the German heavy cruiser Blücher, delaying the invasion of Oslo and letting the king and government escape.
Visiting today
Decommissioned as a military base in 2002 and heritage-protected in 2014, Oscarsborg is now a museum, hotel and concert venue, reached by this visitor ferry. Tickets are bought in advance in Norwegian kroner and shown as a QR code, valid seven days for the round trip.
