About the DoverDunkirk crossing

The Dover to Dunkirk ferry is the calmer, less hurried alternative to the neighbouring Dover–Calais route, connecting the Port of Dover in Kent with the French port of Dunkirk (Dunkerque) in the Hauts-de-France region. It appeals to drivers who want to skip the busier Calais terminal and to those heading east towards Belgium, the Netherlands and beyond, since Dunkirk sits closer to the A16 corridor for onward travel.

Operator and crossing time

The route is run exclusively by DFDS, which operates it as the reverse of its Dunkirk–Dover service. The crossing takes about 2 hours, a little longer than Dover–Calais, but the extra time is often offset by quieter check-in and a more relaxed boarding experience. DFDS runs regular departures through the day and night, with sailings spaced roughly every two hours and up to around a dozen crossings daily at busy periods.

Vehicles only

This is a vehicle-focused crossing: cars, motorhomes, motorcycles, caravans and freight are all catered for, but foot passengers are not carried on Dover–Dunkirk. Every passenger must travel with a vehicle. Onboard, DFDS ships offer lounges, catering and shops to pass the two-hour passage.

Passports and borders after Brexit

British passport holders cross as visa-exempt visitors for short stays and must carry a valid passport. The EU's biometric Entry/Exit System (EES) is now live at Dover, so first-time travellers complete fingerprint and facial registration at terminal kiosks, and a separate ETIAS authorisation is expected later in 2026. Because Dunkirk is generally less congested than Calais, queues can be shorter, but it is still wise to arrive in good time during summer and holidays.
