Dover to Calais Ferry

The Dover to Calais crossing is the busiest short-sea route on the English Channel and the classic gateway between England and mainland Europe. The 21-nautical-mile hop links the Port of Dover in Kent with the Port of Calais in northern France, and it remains the fastest, most frequent conventional ferry link across the Strait of Dover.

Who operates the route

Three companies share the crossing, so departures run around the clock. P&O Ferries and Irish Ferries both complete the passage in roughly 1 hour 30 minutes, while DFDS takes about 1 hour 40 minutes. Combined, the operators offer well over 40 sailings a day, with departures typically every 30 to 60 minutes at peak times, so a missed sailing rarely means a long wait.

Vehicles and foot passengers

This is a heavily vehicle-focused route, ideal for cars, motorhomes, motorcycles and freight. If you are travelling on foot, note that carriage rules differ by operator: P&O Ferries generally accepts foot passengers, whereas Irish Ferries and DFDS on this crossing are primarily aimed at accompanied vehicles. Always confirm foot-passenger availability at the time of booking.

Passports and borders after Brexit

Since the UK left the EU, British passport holders travel to France as visa-exempt visitors for short stays and must carry a passport valid for the trip. The EU's biometric Entry/Exit System (EES) is now in force at Channel ports, so first-time travellers register fingerprints and a facial scan at dedicated kiosks in Dover's Western Docks. A separate ETIAS travel authorisation is expected to be required later in 2026. Allow extra time at the terminal, especially during summer and holiday peaks.
