Bodø to Stamsund is a Vestfjord sea crossing from the mainland transport hub of Bodø to the fishing village of Stamsund on Vestvågøy in Norway's Lofoten islands. Importantly, it is not a conventional car ferry route: the direct link across the fjord is served by Torghatten Nord's passenger-only express boat (the Nordlandsekspressen, "NEX") and by the Hurtigruten / Havila coastal ships. How long is the crossing and how often does it run?

The express boat (NEX) covers Bodø to Stamsund in roughly 3 hours (the full Bodø–Svolvær run is about 3.5 hours), typically with one departure per day in each direction. The coastal ship (Hurtigruten/Havila) calls at Stamsund on its daily schedule and takes about 4 hours from Bodø. Timetables shift by season and can be cut in bad weather, so always confirm current departures before travelling.

Can I take a car to Stamsund?

Not directly on the express boat — the NEX is passenger-only and has no car deck (bicycles and kayaks are usually allowed). To reach Stamsund with a vehicle you have two realistic options:

• Coastal ship: some Hurtigruten/Havila vessels carry a small number of cars, but space is limited, not guaranteed on every ship, and must be arranged in advance.
• Car ferry via Moskenes: take the Torghatten Nord Bodø–Moskenes car ferry (about 3.5 hours), then drive the scenic E10 northeast to Stamsund (roughly 1.5 hours).

On the Bodø–Moskenes car ferry, part of the deck can be pre-booked; reserve early for summer and holidays, and arrive at least 45 minutes before departure.

The Vestfjord crossing (it can be rough)

The route crosses the open Vestfjord, the stretch of sea separating the Lofoten wall from the mainland. It is spectacular in clear weather, with the jagged Lofoten peaks rising ahead — but the fjord is exposed and can be genuinely rough, especially in autumn and winter. Sailings are occasionally delayed or cancelled in strong wind. If you are prone to seasickness, come prepared.

Stamsund vs Moskenes as a Lofoten gateway

Stamsund sits roughly midway along the archipelago, between Moskenes in the southwest and Svolvær in the northeast, which makes it a handy landing point if you want to explore central Lofoten (Leknes, Henningsvær, Nusfjord) without the long drive up from the far tip. The Bodø–Moskenes car ferry is the busier, higher-capacity car route and the standard choice for road-trippers, while Stamsund is the calmer, more local-feeling arrival better suited to foot passengers.
