Ferries from Vlieland

You cannot bring a car here. Not "it is discouraged" or "a permit is required" — visitor vehicles are simply not admitted, which is why the ferry from Harlingen is a passenger boat and why the island has one village and a great deal of empty dune.

The two crossings

• Harlingen on the mainland — about 45 minutes, with 23 sailings in and 21 out in our timetable. Foot passengers and bicycles.
• Terschelling — roughly 30 minutes, with 6 sailings each way, typically once a day.

Both are run by Rederij Doeksen, and everything lands at Oost-Vlieland, the island's only village.

⚠ Plan the mainland end, not the island end

Because the car stays behind, the decision that matters is where you leave it. Harlingen has long-stay parking near the terminal, and the rail station is close enough that arriving by train removes the problem entirely.

On the island, bicycles are hired at the harbour and that is the transport system. Distances are short and the terrain is flat.

A crossing over a tidal seabed

The route threads a marked channel through the Wadden Sea, large parts of which dry to mud at low water. That is why a short distance takes three quarters of an hour, and why the sailings are tied to the tide more than to the clock.

What the island is

Dune, forest, beach and one village, with most of the surface managed as nature reserve. The absence of cars is not a quirk of policy but the reason the place looks as it does.

For visitors that means walking and cycling, and an island that is genuinely quiet rather than marketed as quiet.

Season

The Harlingen service runs year round for the resident population; the Terschelling hop is thinner and more seasonal. Summer weekends fill, and the once-daily inter-island boat is the constraint if you are combining the two islands.
