About

About Terschelling

Of the Dutch Wadden islands, this is the one you can leave without going back to the mainland first. A short crossing runs from West-Terschelling to Vlieland, which sounds unremarkable until you notice that the rest of the chain has no inter-island link at all — each island connects to its own mainland port and nowhere else.

The two crossings

  • Harlingen on the mainland — 18 sailings in and 15 out in our timetable. The conventional ferry takes roughly two hours; the fast service does it in about 45 minutes. Our figures reflect the quick boat.
  • Vlieland — about 30 minutes, with 6 sailings each way, typically once a day.

Both are run by Rederij Doeksen. Everything arrives at West-Terschelling, the island's main village and the only ferry harbour.

⚠ The two Harlingen services are not interchangeable

An hour and a quarter separates them, and they do not follow the same water. The conventional ferry takes the deeper channel and carries vehicles; the fast craft takes a shorter line and is for foot passengers.

Booking on price alone is how people end up with two hours at sea on the way out and forty-five minutes back, or with a car booked onto a service that cannot take it. Read which vessel the ticket names.

Arriving at West-Terschelling

The harbour is in the village, with the Brandaris standing over it — the oldest lighthouse in the Netherlands, on this site since 1594, and the landmark you steer by on the approach.

The island runs about thirty kilometres east from here, mostly dune and forest, with the villages strung along a single road. Bicycles are the normal way to move; the bus network exists but the distances are cyclable and the island is built for it.

The tidal crossing

The route from Harlingen threads a marked channel between shallows that dry to mud at low water — the reason the sailing is longer than the distance suggests, and the reason the Wadden Sea is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Harlingen page covers the navigation and the mainland end.

Season

The Harlingen services run all year for the resident population; the Vlieland hop is thinner and more seasonal. Summer weekends fill, especially on the vehicle deck.

If you are combining both islands in one trip, check the inter-island sailing first — it is the constraint, and building a plan around a once-daily boat is different from building one around a two-hourly one.
