About
About Verftet Ny-Hellesund
Fifty-six sailings a week make this the busiest pier on the Agder island network. Høllen, on the mainland, is 1.7 nautical miles and 15 minutes away; Kapelløya is 0.2 miles and five, with ten departures a day on each between 09:00 and 19:40.
Three day patterns cover the service, which runs into the middle of December rather than stopping at the end of summer.
Ny-Hellesund is a natural harbour between three small islands off Søgne, and it was one of the great shelters on this coast in the age of sail — ships waited here for the wind to let them round the headland. The painter Amaldus Nielsen worked the place repeatedly in the 1880s, and Kapelløya carries a rock face with an inscription cut by Norwegian prisoners' hands. Verftet means the shipyard, which is what stood on this shore.
