Ferries from Svolvær ferjekai

Svolvær is Lofoten's largest town and its ferry quay does something unexpected: 25 of its sailings go to Skrova, an island of a few hundred people, and only a handful go anywhere else.

Where the boats go

• Skrova — about 30 minutes, 25 sailings.
• Skutvik on the mainland — about 2 hours, 1 sailing.

53 active sailings across the quay. Svolvær is also a scheduled call on the Hurtigruten and Havila coastal route, which uses its own berth.

⚠ Skutvik is no longer the main way into Lofoten

This crossing was once the principal mainland link. Most traffic now uses Bodø to Moskenes at the far southwestern end, or drives in on the E10 through Vesterålen.

One sailing in our timetable reflects that. If you are planning to enter Lofoten here, check the current schedule carefully before committing — this is not a route to assume.

Skrova

The island east of town was a whaling station and remains a fishing community, with a population small enough that the ferry is genuinely its road. It has a beach, a mountain worth climbing, and almost no tourism infrastructure.

Twenty-five sailings for a few hundred people is what Norwegian coastal transport policy looks like in practice.

The town

Svolvær has the airport, the hospital, the shops and the fish landing that the rest of Lofoten depends on, and the Svolværgeita — the goat-horn rock above the town that climbers jump between. It is a working town first and a postcard second, which distinguishes it from Reine further southwest.

Season

Year round. The Lofoten cod fishery peaks between January and April, which is when the town is busiest with people who are not visitors.
