Ferries from Svensby ferjekai

Svensby is the Lyngen side of the Ullsfjord crossing, and stepping off here puts you at the foot of a wall of glaciated peaks with no gradual approach. The mountains start where the road does.

The crossing

Svensby to Breivikeidet takes about 20 minutes, with 15 sailings in our timetable. 31 active sailings across the quay.

Breivikeidet on the far side is about an hour from Tromsø by road.

Svensby is not a destination. The road east across the Lyngen peninsula reaches Lyngseidet, where a second county ferry crosses to Olderdalen on the E6 towards Finnmark.

Both crossings have to work for the route to work. Check the second one before relying on the first, particularly outside summer when the timetables thin at different rates.

What you are looking at from the ramp

Peaks above 1,800 m with no foothills to soften them, glaciers sitting in the corries, and sea level at your feet. The whole vertical range is in one view, which is why photographs of Lyngen never look quite real.

Between roughly February and May this quay fills with ski tourers. The rest of the year it is quiet, and anyone heading uphill in summer should understand that these are climbs rather than walks.

What is at the quay

Very little. Lyngseidet, twenty-five minutes east, has the shops and the accommodation. Fuel is not something to assume at either end.

Loading

Turn up, join the line, load in order; the plate is read automatically and walking on is free. The catch is seasonal — on a March weekend the vehicle deck fills with ski tourers well before the sailing count would suggest, and the next boat is not close behind.
