Ferries from Breivikeidet ferjekai

Twenty minutes across the Ullsfjord and the Lyngen Alps are in front of you. Breivikeidet is the Tromsø-side quay for a crossing that has no purpose except access to one of the steepest mountain ranges in Europe.

The crossing

Breivikeidet to Svensby takes about 20 minutes, with 16 sailings in our timetable. 31 active sailings across the quay in both directions.

Breivikeidet is about an hour east of Tromsø by road; Svensby lands you on the Lyngen peninsula.

⚠ The alternative road is very long

Reaching Lyngen without this ferry means driving round the head of the Ullsfjord and back out — a detour measured in hours, on roads that are slow in summer and worse in winter.

If the crossing is cancelled, the plan changes. Check conditions before setting out in winter; this is a genuinely exposed stretch of northern coast.

The Lyngen Alps

A ridge of glaciated peaks rising to over 1,800 metres directly out of the fjord, with almost no foothills. It is the centre of Norwegian ski touring — people arrive in March and April to climb and ski lines that drop from summit to sea level.

Summer walking here is serious rather than casual, and the weather changes faster than the forecasts.

Onward from Svensby

A second ferry from Lyngseidet continues east to Olderdalen on the E6, which makes this pair of crossings a genuine through-route between Tromsø and the Finnmark road rather than a dead end.

Together they save a substantial amount of driving, and both are county ferries with the same turn-up-and-go rules.

Practicalities

No booking, arrival order, AutoPASS by plate, foot passengers free. Ski-touring season fills the vehicle deck at weekends in a way the sailing count does not predict.
