About

About Skarberget ferjekai

This is the Narvik side of the gap in the E6. Norway's main north–south highway runs into the Tysfjord here and resumes twenty-five minutes later on the far shore, and because a trunk road cannot close, neither can this ferry.

The crossing

Skarberget to Bognes takes about 25 minutes, with 27 sailings in each direction in our timetable. It is operated for Nordland county by Torghatten Nord and runs every day of the year.

Skarberget is in Narvik municipality; Bognes is in Hamarøy on the southern side.

What lies north of here

The E6 continues to Narvik, and from Narvik the Ofoten Line carries iron ore from Kiruna in Sweden to an ice-free port — the reason the town exists and the reason the road matters beyond tourism.

Beyond Narvik the highway runs on toward Tromsø and eventually Kirkenes. This crossing is a link in a chain that reaches the Russian border.

⚠ Southbound, the decision is at Bognes not here

Travelling north you simply take this boat. Travelling south from Narvik you arrive at Bognes with a choice, because that quay also serves Lødingen and the island route toward Lofoten and Vesterålen.

If the islands are your destination, the ferry you want is not this one. Work that out before you reach the slipway rather than in the queue.

Practicalities

No booking. Arrival order decides, AutoPASS reads the plate, and walk-on passengers travel free. At roughly one sailing an hour a missed boat is a real wait, and there is nothing at the quay to fill it with.

Winter

The service runs through the polar night because the E6 has to stay open. Weather cancellations happen on exposed Arctic water, and when they do there is no parallel road — the detour is long enough to change the day.
