About

About Bognes ferjekai

One quay, two jobs that have nothing to do with each other. From Bognes a twenty-five minute crossing carries the E6 — Norway's north–south trunk road — over the Tysfjord, and a separate hour-long sailing goes to Lødingen and the road toward Lofoten and Vesterålen. The first runs because the country's main highway would otherwise stop; the second because the islands need a mainland link.

The E6 crossing

Bognes to Skarberget takes about 25 minutes across the Tysfjord, with 27 sailings in each direction in our timetable. Skarberget is in Narvik municipality; Bognes is in Hamarøy.

This stretch of water is legally part of the E6, which is why the service runs year round without exception — the trunk road has to be open, so the boat has to sail. It is operated by Torghatten Nord on behalf of Nordland county.

⚠ The other route leaves at one in the morning

Bognes to Lødingen is a different animal: about 60 minutes, with 24 sailings out and 23 back, and a published pattern of roughly 23 departures a day each way running from 01:00 to 23:30.

A first departure at one in the morning is not a tourist timetable. It exists because freight and residents move on this axis around the clock, and it is genuinely useful: an overnight crossing here can save a whole day on a drive north.

Which one you want

  • Heading straight up or down the E6 — Skarberget. Twenty-five minutes, frequent, no decision to make.
  • Heading for Lofoten, Vesterålen or Harstad — Lødingen. An hour, and it drops you on the right side of the fjord system rather than committing you to the long inland road.

Getting this wrong costs several hours, because the two destinations are on different sides of a large body of water and the road between them is not short.

Boarding and paying

Neither route takes reservations. Vehicles board in arrival order, payment is automatic through AutoPASS number plate recognition, and foot passengers cross free.

On the E6 crossing the frequency makes a full boat a minor inconvenience. On the Lødingen route, with roughly one an hour, it is worth arriving with time in hand.

Winter

Both services run through the winter because both are lifeline links rather than seasonal ones. What varies is the weather: this is exposed water inside the Arctic Circle, and cancellations happen.

The mitigation is the same as everywhere on this coast — the ferry is rarely the first thing to fail, but if it does there is no parallel route, so leave slack on a day that ends with a flight.
