Ferries from Rovinj

The old town here was an island until 1763, when the channel separating it from the Istrian mainland was filled in. That shape still defines the harbour: a dense peninsula of tall houses coming straight down to the water, with the ferry quay on its edge rather than in a purpose-built basin.

What sails from here

The route in our data is the seasonal fast catamaran to Venice, listed at about 3 hours 45 minutes. Our timetable currently holds no active departure times for it.

That is not an error — these Adriatic catamaran services run a short summer season, are announced late, and change operator between years. Check directly with the operator for the current season rather than relying on a schedule found in advance.

⚠ Do not build a trip around a crossing that may not run

The Istria-to-Venice catamarans are genuinely useful when they operate — a morning in Rovinj and an evening in Venice without flying. They are also the first thing withdrawn when a season looks weak.

Treat them as a bonus if they are running, and have the Trieste rail or bus route in mind as the alternative that always exists.

The harbour itself

Rovinj's waterfront is a working fishing and excursion harbour rather than a vehicle ferry terminal. Small boats to the offshore islands of Sveta Katarina and Crveni Otok leave from here continuously in summer, and they are the crossings most visitors actually use.

There is no car ferry. Vehicles reach Rovinj by road, and the Istrian motorway makes that straightforward.

Where it sits in Istria

Pula's airport is around forty minutes south, Poreč half an hour north, and Trieste roughly two hours by road. For most arrivals the practical route into Rovinj is not a boat at all — which is worth saying plainly on a ferry site.
