About
About Rødøy hurtigbåtkai
Forty-five minutes from this quay there is a whisky distillery on an island 32 km out in the Norwegian Sea. Myken Destilleri, founded in 2014, is among the most remote in the world, and it exists because two people decided an almost-deserted island should not be.
Where the boats go
- Gjerøy — about 5 minutes, 5 sailings.
- Vågaholmen — about 20 minutes, 4 sailings.
- Myken — about 45 minutes, 2 sailings.
- Telnes, Sundøy, Bolga and Jektvik — one or two sailings each.
32 active sailings across seven destinations.
⚠ Seven destinations, thirty-two sailings
Divide those and the picture is clear: most of these islands get one or two boats. The five-minute Gjerøy hop is frequent; everything else is a single scheduled connection that has to be planned around.
Check the specific route and the specific day. A quay with seven listed destinations is not a quay with seven services.
Myken
The distillery was founded by Roar Larsen and Trude Tokle with the explicit aim of giving the island a reason to keep existing. It matured whisky in Arctic conditions before anybody else was doing it, and the population went up.
Getting there is two sailings, forty-five minutes each way, in open water. It is not a casual afternoon.
Rødøy
The island is marked by the Rødøyløva, a rounded dome of rock rising straight out of the sea and climbable in about an hour. It is the navigational landmark for this whole stretch of the Helgeland coast.
Season
Year round, reduced in winter, cancelled in weather. On routes with one sailing, a cancellation is a lost day.
