Ferries from Portsmouth

Dover does ninety-minute shuttles. Portsmouth does thirty-three hours to Spain. Every route from this port is a long crossing, several of them overnight with cabins, and that single difference explains everything about how the terminal works and how you should plan.

⚠ A cabin is not optional on the Spanish routes

Thirty-three hours is two nights at sea. Reclining seats exist, but the pricing and the practical reality both assume a cabin, and they sell out first in summer.

Treat the Spain sailings as you would a sleeper train, not a ferry: book the accommodation at the same time as the vehicle, not later.

Britain's best-connected port

Portsmouth offers more routes to France, Spain and the Channel Islands than any other UK port. It ranks second or third among UK ports by passenger traffic depending on the measure used, well behind Dover on volume but far ahead of it on range.

Shore power

Brittany Ferries became the first cross-Channel operator to depart the UK on electricity supplied directly from the quayside, at this port. In berth, that means engines off and no exhaust over the city.

Getting there

The port sits north of the city centre with its own road access from the M275, and Portsmouth Harbour railway station is nearby for foot passengers. Cruise traffic shares the site — the port expects more than 150,000 cruise passengers in 2026.
