About Ouistreham
Two ships split the day between them. The Mont St Michel takes the daylight crossings to Portsmouth at 08:30 and 16:30, both six hours; the Guillaume de Normandie takes the 23:30, which is booked at seven hours and 45 minutes. Inbound the roles swap — the Guillaume works the morning and afternoon, the Mont St Michel the 23:00.
The night sailings are the slow ones deliberately: an overnight that arrived at four in the morning would be no use to anybody, so the extra hour and a half is built into the schedule rather than lost at sea. Twenty-one departures a week leave here and 22 come the other way, running to 3 December.
The terminal is at the mouth of the Caen canal, which is why the port carries two names. The beach immediately east is Sword, the easternmost of the D-Day landing sectors, and Pegasus Bridge — taken by glider troops in the first hour of 6 June 1944 — is a few kilometres up the same waterway.
