Ferries from Nesna ferjekai

Nesna ferjekai serves the coastal village of Nesna on Helgeland, a small community known regionally as a university-college and school town. The quay is a junction for two quite different car-ferry services run by Torghatten Nord for Nordland fylkeskommune (Reis Nordland), so it is worth knowing which boat you need before you arrive.

The first is the mainland-connecting run to Levang, a direct crossing of about 25 minutes with no intermediate stops. This link ties Nesna into the through road along the coast and is worked by a high-capacity ferry able to swallow a large number of cars per sailing — useful, because it carries the bulk of the region's vehicle traffic.

The second is the island route out to the Nesnaøyene, the islands off Nesna, calling at Vikholmen along with Handnesøy and the larger island of Tomma. This is a classic lifeline service for small island communities, with fewer daily departures and stops that depend on the timetable, typically operated by a smaller vessel.

Both are genuine car ferries (ferjekai), not passenger express boats, and both use the national AutoPASS ferje payment system — drivers with a registered AutoPASS ferje card pay a reduced fare, foot passengers a small amount, and bicycles cross cheaply or free. The routes run year-round, though the island service in particular follows a lighter schedule, so check departure times for Vikholmen and the outer islands rather than the busier Levang run. Nesna village itself offers shops, food and lodging close to the quay, making it a practical waypoint on the Helgeland coast. The setting is scenic too, with the distinctive Nesna mountains — the row of peaks known locally as the Seven Sisters' near neighbours — rising behind the harbour, and the islands of Tomma and Handnesøy filling the view out to sea. For most visitors the quay is a functional transfer point rather than an attraction, but it is a pleasant one, and the short island sailings offer an easy taste of Helgeland's quiet outer coast.

The two services in numbers

The Levang link is about 25 minutes with 14 sailings on the mainland leg and 28 across the quay in both directions — roughly one an hour across the operating day, on a compulsory section of county road 17.

The Nesnaøyene island run is a different scale entirely: fewer daily departures, a smaller vessel, and calls at Vikholmen, Handnesøy and Tomma that depend on the day of the week. Read the timetable rather than the map.

Nesna is also the mainland end of the Helgeland express boats — 24 sailings from the separate hurtigbåtkai to Lovund, Onøy, Stokkvågen and Sandnessjøen. Three services, two quays, one village name.

What Nesna is besides a ferry quay

Roughly 1800 residents, a university college campus, a harbour and three separate boat services — an unusual concentration for a village this size, and entirely a consequence of being the point where the road, the fjord and the islands meet.

The Helgeland coast has several such places. What distinguishes Nesna is that all three services run from within walking distance of each other, which is not true at Sandnessjøen or Stokkvågen.

The islands the second route serves

Tomma, the largest of the Nesnaøyene, rises to 926 m straight out of the sea — a cone visible from most of this stretch of coast and climbable in about 4 hours return from the quay. Handnesøya and Vikholmen are lower and flatter.

Fv17, the Coastal Route, uses six ferry crossings between Steinkjer and Bodø. The 25-minute run from here to Levang is one of them, and there is no road around it.
