Kythira belongs administratively to Attica but sits off the southern Peloponnese, closer to Crete than to Athens. That misalignment between where it is and where it is governed from runs through its whole transport picture.

With this handful of connections, a cancelled boat has no same-day replacement. Kythira sits in open water between the Peloponnese and Crete, where the wind funnels between two land masses and builds quickly.

Do not plan a departure from here on the day of a flight. The island's own airport, with flights to Athens, is the insurance policy worth knowing about.

Where the boats dock

The main port is Diakofti on the east coast — a modern quay built for the ferries, well away from Chora, the island's capital in the south. Buses and taxis meet the boats, but there is little at the port itself.

This is a common Greek arrangement and it catches people who assume the ferry lands at the town whose name is on the ticket.

The Antikythera connection

The tiny island of Antikythera, between here and Crete, is served on the same route network. It has a population in double figures and is the source of the Antikythera mechanism — the ancient geared astronomical computer recovered from a wreck offshore in 1901.

The island

Kythira is large, sparsely populated and unusually green for the region, with a Venetian castle above Chora and a road network that takes longer to drive than the map implies. It gets a fraction of the visitors of the Cyclades and is quite deliberately not set up for volume.
