Ferries from Kragerø ferjekai

Two minutes. That is the shortest crossing from this quay, and it is one of eight — Kragerø runs a small archipelago network out of a town centre quay, with 253 active sailings, which is more than most Norwegian ferry ports in this database manage with far bigger boats.

The western fjord ferries carry people to work all year. This network carries people to summer houses, and the difference shows: the timetable expands enormously in July and contracts to a skeleton in November.

Jomfruland

The long, low island out at the seaward edge is the one most visitors are aiming for — a national park, a lighthouse, beaches of rounded stones, and no cars. Twenty-five minutes and only a handful of sailings, so the last boat back matters.

It is a moraine ridge left by the ice, which is why it looks nothing like the granite skerries between it and the town.

The town quay

The boats leave from the middle of Kragerø, a white wooden town wrapped around a narrow harbour. Everything — parking, shops, the tourist office — is within a couple of minutes of the gangway.

That is what makes the two-minute crossing to Skåtøy feel less like a ferry than a footbridge that happens to float.

Practicalities

Small passenger boats, frequent departures on the inner routes, cash-free ticketing. Bicycles are carried and are the right way to use Skåtøy and Stabbestad.
