About

About Kinderdijk, Molenkade

Molenkade at Kinderdijk is the upstream stop on the WaterShuttle running down the Lek and Noord rivers to Rotterdam — 16 sailings between 09:10 and 17:55, about 35 minutes to the Erasmusbrug. Kinderdijk's nineteen windmills, built in the eighteenth century to drain the polder, are a UNESCO World Heritage site, and arriving by water rather than by road puts them in the context they were built for: the boat crosses the very drainage system the mills were made to manage. The service is seasonal and daylight-only. The mills are still individually owned and several are lived in, which is unusual for a heritage site of this scale.
