Ferries from Juist

Juist is car-free and tide-bound, and those two facts govern every visit. The ferry from Norddeich usually runs once a day at a time the tide sets, takes about 90 minutes, and passes the seal banks en route.

Before you travel

Your car stays on the mainland — there is no vehicle deck to Juist and no traffic on the island. Luggage is checked in at the Norddeich terminal before boarding, at Fährbrücke 1 on the western mole. Book early even for a day trip: one sailing does not stretch.

Getting about

On foot, by bicycle, or by horse-drawn carriage. Motor traffic has been kept off the island for a century, and the quiet is the reason most people come.

When the boat doesn't work

The ferry group also runs an island air service, which on a tide-bound route is a practical alternative rather than a luxury — worth knowing if your dates are fixed and the sailing time is not.
