Ferries from Hingham (Hewitts Cove)

Most commuter ferries take you to a downtown office. This one also takes you to an airport — Hingham has a direct boat to Logan, which makes it a genuine alternative to the drive through the tunnels rather than just a nicer way to commute.

• Hull — about 15 minutes, 10 sailings.
• Long Wharf — about 35 minutes, 9 sailings.
• Logan Airport — about 30 minutes, 5 sailings.
• Georges Island — about 20 minutes, 3 sailings. Seasonal, for the harbour islands.

⚠ The Logan sailings are few and the flight is not

Five departures is not a service you can turn up for. It works beautifully if a sailing lines up with your flight and not at all if it does not, and there is no later boat to fall back on.

Check the specific departure against the specific flight before committing. When it fits, it is the least stressful way to reach Logan from the South Shore.

Where the terminal is

The dock is at Hingham Shipyard, a former Second World War shipbuilding site on the Weymouth Back River now redeveloped with parking, shops and housing around it. Parking is the reason the route works as a commuter option.

Georges Island

The seasonal harbour island sailings run to Fort Warren on Georges Island, from where a free inter-island shuttle reaches the others. It turns a commuter dock into the starting point for a day out in the Boston Harbor Islands.

Timing

Weekday peaks carry the traffic and midday service is thin. The harbour island sailings are summer only, and the whole network runs a reduced pattern in winter.
