High Island — Leung Shuen Wan in Cantonese — lies in the far east of Hong Kong's waters, reached by eight sailings a day from Sai Kung, an hour each way between 09:30 and 17:30. The island was joined to the mainland by the dams of the High Island Reservoir in the 1970s, but the settlements on its seaward side still have no road, so the ferry remains their link. The hexagonal volcanic rock columns along the coast here are the centrepiece of the Hong Kong Global Geopark, and most visitors on these boats are heading for them. The reservoir dams that joined the island to the mainland created a freshwater lake in what had been a sea channel, and the road along them is a popular cycling route.
