Hakodate is where Hokkaido meets the rest of Japan by sea. Aomori on Honshu is a 219 to 220 minute crossing — three hours and forty minutes — with 6 sailings a week in each direction; Oma at the tip of the Shimokita peninsula takes 90 minutes, with 5.
The Aomori boats run almost around the clock, from 02:30 to 22:25, on a single daily calendar. Tsugaru Kaikyo Ferry works both routes.
The Seikan Tunnel has carried trains under this strait since 1988, and the Shinkansen since 2016, but the ferries still run because the tunnel takes no cars and no freight lorries. Hakodate itself was one of the first Japanese ports opened to foreign trade in 1854, which is why its hillside carries churches, a Russian consulate and a fort laid out as a five-pointed star.
