About

About Garpaskjær ferjekai

Garpaskjær is the mainland quay for Utsira, Norway's smallest municipality by population — around two hundred people on an island 18 kilometres out in the North Sea. The crossing takes seventy minutes and there are 22 sailings between 06:30 and 20:00, run by Kolumbus. Utsira has no shelter from the open sea in any direction, and crossings are cancelled in weather that would not trouble a fjord route. The island is known among birdwatchers as one of the best migration observation points in northern Europe. Utsira installed one of the world's first wind-hydrogen power systems in 2004, an experiment in running an isolated community on stored renewable energy.
