Ferries from Forøy ferjekai

Forøy ferjekai is a small car-ferry quay in Meløy municipality on the Helgeland coast, and one of the string of short ferry crossings that stitch together Fv17, the Kystriksveien coastal road. From Forøy the ferry runs south across the sound to Ågskardet, the neighbouring quay on the far shore, linking the road as it winds between Bodø and Steinkjer.

The crossing is short and frequent by the standards of this coast: the direct hop to Ågskardet takes only around 13 minutes, covering roughly 2.6 km of water. The route is operated by Torghatten Nord for Nordland fylkeskommune (Reis Nordland), historically with vessels such as MF Fykan. Because it carries a national road, it runs year-round with a regular daytime timetable, though sailings thin out in the evening.

This is a car ferry (ferjekai) geared to through-traffic rather than a passenger express boat. Fares are collected through the AutoPASS ferje system and are modest for such a short leg — a car with driver costs only a small amount (in the region of 85 kr full fare, or about 70 kr with an AutoPASS ferje card), foot passengers pay a token fare, and bicycles cross free.

Forøy itself is tiny — essentially the quay, a waiting area with a toilet, and the road — set against the dramatic scenery of the Svartisen glacier region and the Helgelandskysten National Tourist Route. Most travellers here are road-trippers driving the Kystriksveien, for whom Forøy–Ågskardet is simply one link in a chain of ferry crossings rather than a destination in itself. There is little in the way of services at the quay, so plan fuel and food around the larger villages along the route.
