About Eyin Osa
Six tenths of a nautical mile, and the boat is booked at 20 minutes for it. Two sailings a day in each direction — 08:00 and 11:00 — twelve a week, Monday to Saturday, with Lagos State Waterways.
Twenty minutes for a distance that a fast boat would cover in three tells you the vessel is slow, heavily loaded, or working a channel that does not run straight. On the Epe lagoon, where the water is shallow and the passage between weed beds and fish traps is not a line, all three tend to be true at once.
Epe sits at the eastern end of the Lagos lagoon system, an old fishing and trading town that was a major centre long before the metropolis reached this far — Kosoko, the deposed Oba of Lagos, held it in exile in the 1850s. Eyin Osa is one of the waterside communities across from Ayetoro, close enough to see and far enough to need the boat.
