Cuttyhunk is the outermost of the Elizabeth Islands off Cape Cod, with fewer than twenty year-round residents, and its 12 sailings between 09:00 and 19:00 connect it to New Bedford in about an hour. The Cuttyhunk Ferry Company runs the route as the island's only scheduled link. There is no bridge, no supermarket and effectively no cars — golf carts do the work. Summer swells the population many times over, and the ferry timetable expands with it; in winter the service drops to a few crossings a week carrying mail and supplies. The island guards the western entrance to Buzzards Bay, and the harbour fills with cruising yachts through the summer months.
