About
About Cuttyhunk Ferry Pier, New Bedford, MA
The Cuttyhunk Ferry Pier is the New Bedford, Massachusetts mainland terminal for the only scheduled passenger and freight boat to Cuttyhunk, the westernmost of the Elizabeth Islands at the mouth of Buzzards Bay. Boarding is at State Pier, on the northeast corner at the foot of Union Street in downtown New Bedford's working harbor (02740), a short walk from the whaling-era Historic District and the National Park visitor center.
The route is operated by the family-run Cuttyhunk Ferry Company aboard the M/V Cuttyhunk, a vessel licensed for up to 149 passengers that also hauls freight, groceries, and luggage for the tiny island community. The crossing runs the length of outer Buzzards Bay and takes roughly one hour dock to dock. Because Cuttyhunk has no car ferry, this passenger service and private boats are the island's only link to the mainland.
Reservations are required for every passenger and all freight and are made through the company's online system - this is not a walk-on, turn-up-and-ride operation, especially in peak season.
Schedule and season
Frequency swings sharply with the calendar. In summer (roughly mid-June to early September) the boat sails daily with multiple departures, typically a morning 9:00 am run plus early-afternoon and, on busy days, evening sailings. Spring and fall drop back to a Friday-through-Monday pattern, and the winter timetable shrinks to limited Monday and Friday service, with extra holiday trips available by calling ahead. Sailings are weather-dependent on this exposed bay, so calling the office before departure during marginal conditions is advised.
Limited short-term parking sits in the adjacent State Pier lot; the ticket office issues parking passes and can point drivers to long-term lots nearby. From I-195 take the Route 18 South exit into downtown, then follow signs toward MacArthur Drive and State Pier along the waterfront.
