Ferries from Cairnryan

Cairnryan is a ferry port with almost nothing around it, at the head of Loch Ryan in southwest Scotland, and that isolation is the price of the shortest crossing on the northern Irish Sea corridor.

The crossing

Cairnryan to Larne takes about 2 hours 15 minutes, with 6 sailings in our timetable, operated solely by P&O Ferries. A route to Belfast is also listed but currently holds no active departures in our data.

This is the fastest way across the North Channel, the narrow water between Scotland and Northern Ireland.

⚠ The drive to the port is the hard part

Cairnryan is about 130 km from Glasgow on roads that are mostly single carriageway, and there is no railway station. Whatever the crossing saves in sea time, the approach can take back.

Work out the total door-to-door journey before choosing this over a longer sailing from a better-connected port. For anyone coming from northern England or Scotland it wins comfortably; from the Midlands or the south it often does not.

What is there

A terminal building, parking and a village. Stranraer, the nearest town of any size, is about ten kilometres south and has the shops and accommodation that Cairnryan does not.

Arriving the night before a morning sailing means staying in Stranraer, not here.

Why the port is where it is

Loch Ryan is a deep, sheltered inlet pointing directly at the Antrim coast — the shortest practical gap between the two islands. The port was developed during the Second World War and the ferry operations moved here from Stranraer itself as ships got larger and needed more space than the town quay could give.

Timing

Sailings run year round with a commuter-and-freight rhythm rather than a seasonal one. The North Channel is exposed and winter weather does disrupt crossings, though far less often than on the smaller Scottish island routes.
