The Hakodate boats never really stop. Six departures a day run from Aomori across the Tsugaru Strait, the first at 02:30 and the last at 22:25, with arrivals from Hokkaido spread just as widely from 03:20 to 22:05. Each crossing takes between 215 and 225 minutes.
Muroran is the other destination and behaves nothing like it: one sailing a day at 10:40, booked at 405 minutes out and 420 back — closer to seven hours, on a route that reaches much further up the Hokkaido coast.
Tsugaru Kaikyo Ferry runs all of it with a fleet whose names all begin the same way — Blue Dolphin, Blue Happiness and Blue Mermaid on the Hakodate rotation, Blue Grace on the long Muroran run. A timetable that puts sailings at half past two in the morning is not built for tourists; it is built for freight drivers crossing between Honshu and Hokkaido overnight.
