The crossing covers 0.6 nautical miles of the Malamocco inlet in 10 minutes, running 36 sailings a week in each direction on a single daily calendar. Departures start at 00:45 and finish at 23:45, and arrivals from the far side begin at 00:30 — this is a road link, and roads do not close.

The Rocchetta in the name is the artillery fort built into the dunes here in the 19th century, part of the ring of works guarding the lagoon entrances. What passes the fort now is a queue of cars waiting for one of the 36 weekly sailings that carries them to a sandbar with a single road down its length.
